last year I saw our first snow bcs I opened my alert and it was 8.30AM and was written that in my city was snowing...when I raised my eyes looking on the window...surprise...it was as Yahoo informed...

I’m really fed up with Yahoo mail. For more than a week now I’m not able to respond to emails. Every time I press send I either get “page cannot be displayed” or “error 999”. I can only respond by initiating a completely new email and even that doesn’t work if I copy and paste the original email text (to which I would like to respond) into the new email.
I’m also annoyed with Yahoo because there is no setting where only people in your contact list can send you email. My spam problem would be sorted completely by simply applying such a setting. As much as I despise Hotmail, at least they have that facility.

To my knowledge you can not download Yahoo mail to or from Outlook Express. However you can config GMail to open in Outlook Express and also to send from Outlook Express using your GMail account.
I have my GMail account config to open in Outlook Express, and Now I have all the features (Stationary, adding sound %26amp; color backgrounds etc.) of Outlook Express appearing on my messages sent via GMail.

First off, they advertise, advertise, advertise. As well, they make money with some companies by allowing some junk mail to bypass the Bulk filter and end up in your inbox. Another thing is that these companies know that most email users wouldnt even use HALF of the 1GB storage, for example i only use 2MB of the storage. Although they say they have 1GB storage per user, they dont actually carry 1GB storage per account made. And the cost on 1 GB these days is about 50 cents max, so giving you 1GB storage for 50 cents and earning back a few hundred dollars from an advertisement still yields profit.

Is it free to enable POP with Gmail?
Yes it is and you don't have to pay for a "Plus" account like you do on Yahoo. Just finished doing this and I'm getting rid of my Yahoo mail account because I can't pop it with Windows mail on my computer like I can with Gmail. Yahoo screwed up on this one. They get enough from advertising but want to charge for Mail plus just so we can use Outlook not to mention all the tracking cookies that pop up everytime you sign on to Yahoo. Big blunder on their part.

What's the use of an e-mail client when you have free e-mail like Gmail & Yahoo! Mail?
Email client works as an extension of those web-based emails. You can set up an Gmail and an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird to use POP3 protocol to fetch email from gmail. Can free email providers (like Gmail, yahoo, dango, hotmail etc.) have the right to/do they look at my emails?
Can free email providers (like Gmail, yahoo, dango, hotmail etc.) have the right to/do they look at my emails?
I thought they couldn't just look at my stuff, since it may contain confidential information, but someone told me different yesterday.
Just wondering what is the truth???

The only reason i am asking is because i am worried that passwords i have for internet website accounts (that get sent through email) will be stolen. I'm just worried about that??

The service provide has the right to read any email that is sent. The key words is right. In actual truth they don't.
What happens is the email is scanned by a pc system when it is sent - no human intervention.
This system is designed to locate and pick up certain emails. This could be based on:
Location
Owner of account
Content of email i.e racist
If your emails passes it is sent.
It something is picked up it is scanned again - delayed.
If the system finds an email that breaks the pre recorder set messure the email can then be lawfully read by a human in confidnetiality to ensure the email is safe.
So I hope this helps:
99.9 % of emails are not read.

It's not worth their time or business.

Why don't companies that support free emails (yahoo, gmail, hotmail) provide better spam filters?
granted, gmail is better than the rest, but it could even be improved. why doesn't yahoo improve theirs? yahoo's and hotmail's "mark as spam training" doesn't seem to be effective at all. gmail seems to work okay for me, and rarely misses some, but it could be improved.
an example of a good spamfilter (also FREE) -- SPAMBAYES has a "junk email folder" but then also has an "unsure" folder...
See, each email is given a %spam rating. and under 10% is considered real email (aka HAM), and over 90% is considered SPAM. between 10-90% goes into the unsure (which rarely happens), and it seems to be really really accurate. There is also an initial training, and since everyone receives different kinds of spam/ham this helps make it very accurate.
having this extra folder, an initial training period, and %spam rating system seems to make it virtually error-free.
am i missing something? anyone think yahoo spam/bulk mail should be improved in a similar fashion? why don't they?

In Gmail create a Saved Messages folder and move the e-mails you sent to yourself there for ease in locating them again later.

They may intend to eventually charge for it. So right now people who use it and find problems are essentially giving free beta testing results.
Or perhaps it's just a trick to make me get used to gmail has essential, then charging for it.

A POP3 account access guarantees (well, almost) that we will check our emails each day. Adding such a service also endorses Google as a brand name. And they keep on building on their huge database of Gmail users.
Now, if Google does come out with a new paid service wouldn't it be easy to tell everyone - simply send a promotional email to all Gmail users?
Finally, I think the main revenue from Adwords/Adsense comes from Google search pages and their partner sites (websites that display Adsense ads). I think the ads on Gmail accounts yield only a very small fraction of their total earnings. (At least I don't think I have clicked on any ads on my Gmail account)

You can do Yahoo's by installing and running YPOPS! Even Hotmail if you want to use it, but you can't use both as they use a local host and some conflicts do arise.

I currently use Yahoo and Gmail. I would have to vote for Gmail since it offers greater storage space and I can use it with Outlook for free. I like the tagging feature also.

I think Gmail is the best free e-mail service available. It offers more storage space than any other service. They are currently offering over 2GB of storage space. You have a better opportunity to get a good screen name since it has not been around for as long as some of the other services. It has a very user friendly interface. You don't have to delete any e-mail and you can quickly search through all of your archived mail. They have a very good spam filter. The text ads are very unobstructive. And the best thing is that they are always improving this great service!

Reply:This is one of those apps that is either a blessing or a curse, depending on how many emails you receive per day. If you鈥檙e the kind of person whose inbox gets showered with emails every 60 seconds then this might not be the best app for you to install - not unless you fancy having your mobile phone beeping every minute and driving you totally insane.
But if your email intake is moderate or if you tend to be away from the computer a lot when important emails arrive then this might be just the very thing for you. GSN SMS Notifier is basically a small free application that allows you to get email alerts on mobile via SMS. It sits on your computer and monitors your inbox for incoming emails. When one arrives, it sends a SMS to your mobile phone, notifying you of the sender, the subject and the first one to two lines of the email.
What鈥檚 very useful about it is that it is not confined to just checking desktop POP3 inboxes. It also checks online Gmail accounts too. So when I was testing this, I had it monitor my Gmail account. It also sends SMS messages to any phone anywhere in the world. It sends the messages through either ICQ (free of charge) or through Skype (with Skype credit). You have to have one of these apps installed on your computer and if it鈥檚 Skype, you need to have enough credit on your Skype account (it costs the same as sending a normal SMS message in your country).
So, let鈥檚 set it up.

Reply:This is one of those apps that is either a blessing or a curse, depending on how many emails you receive per day. If you鈥檙e the kind of person whose inbox gets showered with emails every 60 seconds then this might not be the best app for you to install - not unless you fancy having your mobile phone beeping every minute and driving you totally insane.
But if your email intake is moderate or if you tend to be away from the computer a lot when important emails arrive then this might be just the very thing for you. GSN SMS Notifier is basically a small free application that allows you to get email alerts on mobile via SMS. It sits on your computer and monitors your inbox for incoming emails. When one arrives, it sends a SMS to your mobile phone, notifying you of the sender, the subject and the first one to two lines of the email.
What鈥檚 very useful about it is that it is not confined to just checking desktop POP3 inboxes. It also checks online Gmail accounts too. So when I was testing this, I had it monitor my Gmail account. It also sends SMS messages to any phone anywhere in the world. It sends the messages through either ICQ (free of charge) or through Skype (with Skype credit). You have to have one of these apps installed on your computer and if it鈥檚 Skype, you need to have enough credit on your Skype account (it costs the same as sending a normal SMS message in your country).
So, let鈥檚 set it up.
Once you鈥檝e installed it, let鈥檚 dive into the configuration section.
The first thing you need to specify is the length of time GSN should check your account and the mobile phone number it should send SMS notifications to. When noting down the mobile phone number, remember the international dialling code
You also need to specify who should send your SMS鈥檚 - ICQ or Skype. But remember, the chosen app needs to be installed on your computer.
Next up, specify what email account it should check. You can choose between an online Gmail account or a desktop POP3 account. Then enter your account details. You can also specify labels it should check instead of the actual inbox.
I left the rules one alone so the last one for me was the SMS template. I also left this one alone but you might want to fiddle with this one if you want to customise what the SMS message says.
Then close the box. It will then ask you if you want to save the changes. Say yes and everything will save. The app will minimise to the taskbar and that鈥檚 you ready to go.
So when an email hits my inbox (a fake email that I sent to a dummy test account), the SMS arrives at my mobile phone :
If you have internet access enabled on your phone (such as the iPhone, Blackberry or Windows Mobile), you can, if you want, go to your inbox straight away to see the full text of the email. Otherwise, the SMS would just serve as a confirmation that an email has definately arrived from a certain person and you would have to read it later when you returned to your computer.
It鈥檚 good for me because I have a Gmail account but for those who don鈥檛 have Gmail accounts, it kind of sucks a bit. It would be nice if the developer would extend this service to other email services such as Yahoo and Hotmail. Also, I鈥檓 trying to think if there are any other reliable SMS providers other than ICQ and Skype to try and cut down on SMS costs that I could suggest to the developer - any ideas?

if you use windows you will have one already installed. if you have XP or older versions it is 'Outlook Express" and if you use Vista, it is "Microsoft Mail' . Unfortunately, yahoo does not offer pop3 downloading of its emails , unless you have a paying (plus) account with them. However gmail, hotmail and most other free webmails offer pop3 protocol which you will need in order to use the programs i mentioned.
If you have Microsoft office installed on your computer, it comes with Mircosoft Outlook which is a lot better than the free outlook express.
Regarding, safety, i am not sure what you exactly mean, but i would say they are at least as safe as webmails, if not safer. Webmails have the advantage that they check your emails/attachments for viruses as soon as you open them, but you can still have that with email clients if you have an anti-virus installed that checks files on access.
One thing to note, if you decide to go the pop3 way, is to make sure you have the correct setting in your client on if you want it to keep the downloaded emails on your webmail servers or not.

1) In your PC Yahoo Messenger, in the file menu click "Actions" and select "Send an SMS message.."

Method 1 allows you to send to a wider list of countries and carriers. Method 2 is restricted to U.S. for now.
Reply:The "free" part clinches it. So far as I know, you CAN send SMS easily, but for a price. There IS a way to send text to most phones though. If you know the number, and the carier's @blahmobile.com address, it should work. It'll come through to the phone, but simply as an email, rather than a simple messenger service text. The result will be the same. Whoever ya need to contact, will get the message. Keep in mind that's from YAHOO, or GMAIL. if you go to the person's cell phone carrier website, and look around for someting like "send a text message" ya should be able to send a text to the phone number absolutely free.
