Free email (e.g. yahoo, gmail) vs. private (domain.com) email accounts - which are better for a new website?

In setting up new websites, which is better for management and ease of review, a free email service (e.g. yahoo, gmail) or setting up email with the newly purchased domain. Pros and cons of each?
Free email (e.g. yahoo, gmail) vs. private (domain.com) email accounts - which are better for a new website?
You should usually have little trouble setting up email accounts on your new webhost, and this will give your website much more credibility.

If you want webmail you can also add forwarders to your yahoo/gmail account so that you can pick up business mail anywhere.

Setting up POP3 clients on MS Outlook etc is a little more involved.

One thing I would suggest is that you encrypt your email addresses in the HTML code so that they can't be harvested by spambots. There are numerous free online facilities which will uncode your email addresses (known as email mungers) - you can find a few of them listed on our tech resources page

Reply:web based mail:

Pros's- easy to change if spamming takes over

- no charge

Cons- Gives the website a budget feel

- can be associated with fraudulent companies

-if details are to be exchanged through it, your endangering your customers

-can be posed by other phising websites

Private domain:

Pros's - avoids the hassle of security if you have a spam filter (all the rubbish you get sent will be separated)

- reduced chance of phising websites

- once set up will probably be easier for a starting business

- less of a danger for customers

con's - hassle to start

- expensive to run (software, monthly charges

-cannot be easily changed

Web based forum: this is another option that i thought i should put in. from here people can search for answers to questions and they are all publicly available to access. this would save you time and money. all you need to do is answer the questions when they appear and then they are stored for future reference. unfortunately i do not know how to create them.
